Afterlight, Albufera explores the shifting light and atmosphere of the Albufera wetlands near Valencia, where expanses of water, land and sky merge into a landscape of quiet reflection.
A dramatic sky unfolds in muted violet, rose and bronze, its changing colours reflected across the water below. Low horizons and softened boundaries create a sense of openness, while layered passages of colour suggest the subtle movement of weather across the landscape.
Working between representation and abstraction, Justin Butler uses oil and acrylic to explore the relationship between water, light and the passage of time. The painting invites a moment of stillness within a landscape continually shaped by natural processes.
