Between Tides
ÂŁ595.00

Between Tides explores a fleeting coastal interval, when water recedes and the landscape appears briefly suspended.

A delicate horizon and a single, meandering mark across muted sands suggest tidal movement without fixing the scene to a particular place.

Through restraint, softened edges and layered colour, the painting holds both the stillness and continual change of the shoreline.

Holding Light
ÂŁ595.00

Holding Light captures the quiet intensity of a coastal landscape as darkness settles.

A vast, turbulent night sky dominates the composition, with deep charcoal, muted violet and warm umber clouds gathering above a distant headland. Traces of golden light linger along the horizon, catching the surface of the water and reflecting across the exposed tidal sands.

Built through layers of oil and acrylic, the painting moves between observation and abstraction. Softened edges, expressive textures and subtle shifts in colour evoke the movement of weather and the gradual disappearance of daylight.

There is a tension between the restless sky and the stillness of the shoreline, creating a contemplative moment in which the landscape seems suspended between light and darkness.

Springtide
ÂŁ540.00

Springtide captures the quiet openness of a coastal landscape, where the retreating water leaves behind a shoreline transformed by light and tide.

A softly illuminated sky stretches above silvery water, its delicate reflections contrasting with the rich terracotta and earthy tones of the exposed foreground. Subtle horizontal marks suggest the movement of shallow water across the shore, while the softened horizon allows sea and sky to merge.

Working between representation and abstraction, the painting explores the relationship between weather, water and the changing character of the coastline. Its restrained palette and expansive composition create a sense of stillness within a landscape continually shaped by natural forces.

Afterlight, Albufera
ÂŁ1,150.00

Afterlight, Albufera explores the shifting light and atmosphere of the Albufera wetlands near Valencia, where expanses of water, land and sky merge into a landscape of quiet reflection.

A dramatic sky unfolds in muted violet, rose and bronze, its changing colours reflected across the water below. Low horizons and softened boundaries create a sense of openness, while layered passages of colour suggest the subtle movement of weather across the landscape.

Working between representation and abstraction, Justin Butler uses oil and acrylic to explore the relationship between water, light and the passage of time. The painting invites a moment of stillness within a landscape continually shaped by natural processes.

Behind the paintings

My background in physical geography shapes how I see the landscape. I'm fascinated by places formed over geological time, yet continually transformed by water, weather and light.

Working between representation and abstraction, I paint to capture moments of stillness within these changing environments.
